TRIP PLANNING ESSENTIALS:
*Timing:* Late June through September only. Snow closes trails from October through May/June.
*Weather:* Check conditions before going. Afternoon thunderstorms common in summer. Start early.
*Road Closures:* Trails often closed due to snow until late June or early July. Call local ranger station to confirm.
*Fuel:* Fill up before heading into the mountains. Limited services once you leave main highways.
*Water:* Bring plenty - at least 1 gallon per person. High elevation increases dehydration.
*Altitude:* Trails reach 10,000+ feet. Be aware of altitude sickness symptoms.
*Communications:* Cell service is spotty to non-existent. GMRS radios recommended for groups.
VEHICLE & GEAR REQUIREMENTS:
Stock high-clearance 4x4 capable on main routes
All-terrain tires sufficient for most sections
Full-size spare tire
Recovery gear recommended (straps, shovel, jack)
Warm layers - temperatures drop significantly at elevation
Rain gear for afternoon thunderstorms
Navigation: GPS, offline maps, Trails Offroad app
DIFFICULTY ASSESSMENT:
Kingston Peak and Loch Lomond trails range from 2/5 (mild) to 3/5 (moderate) depending on which routes you choose. The main trails are accessible to stock 4x4 vehicles with experienced drivers. Some optional side routes offer more technical challenges. The variety makes this trail system great for mixed-skill groups.
ROUTE OPTIONS:
*Loch Lomond Route:* Scenic drive to lake overlook and rock house guestbook
*Yankee Hill Route:* Alternative route with different scenery
*Combined Loop:* Connect both routes for full-day adventure
*Side Trails:* Various spurs offer additional exploration
BEST TIME TO VISIT:
*Late June-July:* Trails just opening, wildflowers, possible lingering snow patches, fewer crowds
*August:* Peak season, warmest temps, afternoon thunderstorms, more traffic
*September:* Excellent temps, fall colors beginning, fewer crowds (BEST overall)
*Avoid:* October-May (snow closes trails completely)
COLORADO ALPINE WHEELING:
If you're used to Moab's desert trails, Colorado alpine wheeling offers a completely different experience. Cooler temperatures, green landscapes, mountain lakes, and higher elevations create unique challenges and scenery. Summer heat in Moab? Head to Colorado's high country for 70-degree wheeling weather.
