Before, it remained as silent stone, standing formidable and tall in its columns and rows. Now, it moves. The Runners wished it never moved. Stone scraps against stone, stopping them from moving forwards, caging them in place. They can only move backwards, retracing the steps they've made hundreds of times before, but despite the fear, they must keep going. The Runners push forwards. Like a dance, the Runners make their way through the maze. Charting new paths, only to scrap them as the Maze changes again. It's an endless of cycle until they find the halls. They're forced to split, standing before two corridors. With bated breath, they run. Hearts pounding in their ears, the scream they will not adhere to. The Maze responds as they run, doors appearing from the tall, tall walls, slamming shut behind them. Quicker and quicker it goes. The Runners don't have much time as they're squeezing through the final pass, they make it and jump just as the final door slams shut. The Runners keep running and the Maze keeps changing. It's constant - a cycle. Endless. They've reached the outer edge, paths that are uncanny to them. They have to pause. Take a moment. Toes pressed to the ground, they spring and they sprint all as the Maze's walls close in and down it all comes towards them. Huffing and puffing and aching and crying as they push past all limits to just be free because WCKD is NOT good not matter how many letters they've seen, lines they've read, messages or help they've received. WCKD is the Maze and the Maze is the fear they'll never forget, seared into their mind, the cage that'll hold their traumas. The Runners are running still, reaching for that opening at the end, a cracked seam not yet patch, pushing out and out. They're free. The Maze screams. Stone scraps against stone, moving angrily that it had before. It does not tease or chase as they've escaped. It resets. Stone slows until it is still once more, laying in wait to become another fearful cage.
