Honolulu in 1941, in real Kodachrome color, scanned from the original 16mm film. Not colorized, not AI. Two home-movie reels shot by a family who lived on Oahu. The first, from 1940, is a drive around the island: the old Pali lookout, a sugar mill in the cane, Rabbit Island, the Halona blowhole, Hanauma Bay. The second is Waikiki from the water, the Royal Hawaiian and the Moana, the Ala Wai yacht harbor under Diamond Head, and a parade the family titled themselves: "Hawaii 1941 Armistice Parade." Armistice Day is the 11th of November. Sailors in whites, soldiers from the garrison, a float that reads "We handle Honolulu's defense cargoes efficiently," the U.S. and Hawaiian flags, and a wreath at the Roll of Honor for the dead of the last war. Twenty-six days later, Pearl Harbor.
