About six million years ago the Mediterranean was cut off from the Atlantic and shrank dramatically. Where yachts anchor today there were blinding plains of salt, bitter brine lakes and canyons on the scale of the Grand Canyon. Then, in what may have been the largest flood in Earth's history, the Atlantic came back. This is the evidence: a drilling ship that brought up the wrong kind of rock, a buried Nile gorge, the chemistry locked inside the salt, and a 200 km scar under the Strait of Gibraltar. And how sure we really are: how far the sea fell is still debated, and we cover that too.
