《拒絕聯考的小子 2025 導演版》The Fellow Who Rejected College 1979/2025|Colour|94min| Mandarin|2025 Director’s Edition of 2K Restoration 導演:#徐進良 Directed by HSU Chin-liang 大學聯考將至,高三教室裡競爭白熱化,學生們為成績斤斤計較。 As the College Entrance Exam approaches, competition in the senior classroom heats up. The students were all obsessed with their grades. WU Hsiang-hui, a class leader at Taipei Municipal Chien Kuo High School, isn’t the top student, but is seen as their best hope for college. During a class outing, he and his close friends meet a group of high school girls at a park, and he begins a sweet and innocent romance with LIN Wei-wei. However, as the exam draws closer, their relationship is met with strong opposition from her parents. Witnessing a senior student break down in class after failing to get into National Taiwan University’s medical school, WU begins questioning the education system. Caught between the education system and the uncertainties of his future, WU boldly rejects the exam, choosing instead to enter society and challenge mainstream values. But this choice brings him immense pressure. Can he stay true to himself and forge his own path? The film is adapted from WU Hsiang-hui’s semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, published in 1975 with over 500,000 copies sold. Upon its release, the movie sparked a nationwide sensation. Directed by HSU Chin-liang (TCHII Ching-long), the film featured fresh faces such as WANG Fu-shi and PENG Hsueh-fen, which also successfully launched their careers in film industry. In an era of martial arts and romance films, this film stood out for its bold critique of the education system and its honest portrayal of youthful defiance during Taiwan’s martial law era. Just as the novel was hailed as “Taiwan’s The Catcher in the Rye,” the film became a landmark in student and coming-of-age cinema, leaving a lasting impact as a classic exploration of youth and education in Taiwan.
