On October 1, 2015, the cargo ship El Faro sank near the center of Hurricane Joaquin, northeast of Crooked Island in the Bahamas. All 33 people aboard were lost. The ship's voyage data recorder, recovered from about 15,400 feet below the surface, captured 26 hours of audio from the bridge. Using that transcript and the official investigations by the National Transportation Safety Board and the U.S. Coast Guard, this documentary follows two stories at once: what the bridge knew — and what was actually happening.
