Meet the New Martin 00-21 Gram Parsons | The Story Behind the Guitar

Celebrate the life, music, and lasting influence of Gram Parsons with the new Martin 00-21 Gram Parsons, a limited-edition Signature Artist model inspired by his original Martin 00-21. In this video from the Martin Museum, Chairman of the Board Chris Martin IV and musician and Martin Clinician Craig Thatcher trace Parsons’ musical journey—from his early folk roots and time with The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers to the blend of country, rock, folk, R&B, and more that he called “Cosmic American Music.” Chris and Craig also share the story behind Parsons’ original 00-21, one of his go-to acoustic guitars, and how access to that historic instrument helped Martin faithfully recreate it for this special Signature Artist Edition. Limited to just 80 guitars in honor of what would have been Gram’s 80th birthday, the 00-21 Gram Parsons pairs a 12-fret 00 body with East Indian rosewood back and sides, a VTS old-growth Sitka spruce top, Golden Era scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing with VTS, and carefully recreated vintage details and visual wear inspired by the original. The video concludes with Craig performing an excerpt of Parsons’ classic “Hickory Wind” on the new 00-21 Gram Parsons.
