Computer networking is the process of connecting multiple devices such as computers, laptops, mobile phones, servers, printers, IoT devices, and cameras through communication channels such as Ethernet, fiber, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or cellular networks so that they can exchange data and share resources. A network consists of end devices, communication media, and networking devices such as switches, routers, modems, and access points. When one device sends data, the information is converted into binary bits, transmitted through the communication medium, routed through the network, and reconstructed at the receiving device. The OSI model explains this communication using seven layers: Physical transmits raw bits over the medium, Data Link handles framing, MAC addressing and local error detection, Network provides logical addressing and routing using IP, Transport provides end-to-end delivery, segmentation, flow/error control using TCP/UDP, Session establishes and manages communication sessions, Presentation handles data formatting, encryption and compression, and Application provides network services directly to applications using protocols such as HTTP, DNS, FTP and SMTP. At the sender, data moves from Layer 7 down to Layer 1, while at the receiver it moves from Layer 1 up to Layer 7. A simple food-delivery analogy can be used to remember this: the customer represents the sender, the restaurant represents the receiver, the food represents data, the delivery vehicle represents data packets, the road represents the network, and each OSI layer performs a specific part of the delivery process to ensure that the data reaches the correct destination reliably and efficiently.
