I was 11 years old when the missionary ship I had called home my entire life sank in the Java Sea.
Nineteen of us climbed into a lifeboat in the middle of the night. No one knew our ship had gone down. No distress signal had been received. No one was coming to look for us.
As the hours passed, fear began to take over. At one point I decided I no longer believed in the God my parents and grandparents had spent their lives serving.
Then, as an old Bible was passed around the lifeboat, two words came quietly to mind:
Psalm 34.
What happened next changed the direction of my life.
But the part we did not discover until months later may be even more remarkable. Thousands of miles away, an underground church in Tbilisi, Georgia, had been praying through the night. A young boy told them he saw a white ship in danger. Hours later, an older woman said she saw the ship had sunk and the evangelists were in a small boat.
One of the names Scripture gives God is El Roi — the God who sees.
He saw an 11-year-old boy in the Java Sea.
And whatever storm you are facing today, He sees you too.
