Please note: This video tutorial is based on the written pattern, but it is a separate tutorial and is not a step-by-step video version of the written instructions. Some steps or techniques may be explained or demonstrated differently in the video. You can use the written pattern or follow the video tutorial according to your preference.
Size 3-4 years (on video):
Chest circumference: 25 inches / 64 cm.
Sweater length: 15 inches / 38 cm.
Sleeve length: 15.5 inches / 40 cm.
Gauge: 19 stitches and 28 rows = 4 × 4 inches / 10 × 10 cm in textured pattern
Needles: US 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles
Worsted weight yarn: 240 g. Sample shown in Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca.
Materials: 7 buttons (approx. 0.6 in / 1.5 cm), scissors, stitch markers, tapestry needle, measuring tape
Special abbreviations and techniques:
k – knit
p – purl
RS – Right Side
WS – Wrong Side
k2tog – knit two stitches together
k3tog - knit three stitches together
**m1R (make one right) – pick up the strand between the previous and next stitch from back to front, knit through the front loop (1 stitch increased)
**m1L (make one left) – pick up the strand between the previous and next stitch from front to back, knit through the back loop (1 stitch increased)
** I use them the other way around!
Bind Off in Pattern – working each stitch as established (knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches). Work the first 2 stitches in pattern. Lift the first stitch over the second stitch and off the needle. Work the next stitch in pattern, then lift the previous stitch over the newly worked stitch and off the needle. Continue working one stitch in pattern at a time and lifting the previous stitch over the newly worked stitch until one stitch remains. Cut the yarn, pull the tail through the remaining stitch, tighten, and weave in the end.
Seed stitch knitting: alternating knit and purl stitches (*k1, p1, repeat *, or *p1, k1, repeat *)
Textured pattern: 1st row: knit; 2nd row: seed stitch; 3rd row: knit; 4th row: seed stitch
Buttonhole: work a one-row buttonhole on the 5-stitch sideband as follows:
RS: k2, slip the 3rd and 4th stitches, insert the top of the left needle into the 3rd stitch on the right needle and lift it over the 4th stitch and off the right needle, return the 4th stitch to the left needle, cast on 1 stitch, k2.
Buttonhole placement:
3–4 years (7 buttonholes): work in rows 9, 23, 37, 51, 65, 79, and 93.
