Effective support strengthens children’s play without taking control away from them. This lesson explores how educators observe, facilitate, scaffold and create enabling environments while keeping the child’s ideas and choices at the centre. You’ll see how supportive play can develop creativity, confidence, communication, social skills and exploration in a safe environment. The lesson also explains the professional judgement involved in deciding when to step in and when to step back, ensuring adult intervention does not replace child-led learning. It considers the benefits for practitioners and families, including adapting provision through observation and reflection, sharing children’s experiences with parents and maintaining consistency between home and the setting. The key message is that effective play support is responsive, balanced and continually refined through reflection and collaboration.
