Unlike traditional Dasara celebrations elsewhere, millions of devotees here take intense vows and transform themselves into striking avatars—ranging from Goddess Kali and Lord Shiva to various animals and mythical characters—by painting their bodies and wearing elaborate costumes. Throughout the 10-day festival, these devotees live like ascetics, fasting, collecting alms, and traveling to the temple to fulfill their prayers, culminating in a massive, electrifying gathering on the shores of the Bay of Bengal for the burning of the effigy and a grand sea bath ritual.
