Sri Mutharamman Temple at Kulasekarapattinam (Kulasai) in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. The temple is traditionally regarded as around 300 years old The central story of Kulasai Dasara is the victory of Goddess Shakti over Mahishasura. Sage Varamuni was cursed by Sage Agastya and became the buffalo-headed demon Mahishasura. Mahishasura became extremely powerful through penance and began troubling the gods and sages. The gods prayed to Goddess Shakti for protection. From the sacred fire of their worship, Lalithambigai appeared. She grew into the powerful form of Parasakthi over nine days.
