49 Years in Space Voyager 1 Is About to Hit Its Most Extraordinary Distance Milestone
After nearly 49 years in space, NASA’s Voyager 1 is approaching a milestone that no human-made object has ever reached: a distance of one light-day from Earth.
Launched on September 5, 1977, Voyager 1 began its journey exploring Jupiter and Saturn before continuing into the vast region beyond the Sun’s protective bubble. In August 2012, it became the first spacecraft to enter interstellar space, where it continues to study the environment between the stars.
NASA calculates that Voyager 1 will reach one light-day from Earth on November 18, 2026. That means it will be approximately 16.1 billion miles, or 25.9 billion kilometers, away. At that distance, a radio signal traveling at the speed of light will take about 24 hours to reach the spacecraft—and a response will require roughly another day to return.
Even more remarkable, Voyager 1 is still transmitting scientific measurements despite its age and dwindling electrical power. Engineers have been switching off some instruments to preserve energy, while two scientific instruments remain active according to NASA’s latest status information.
In this video, we explore Voyager 1’s extraordinary journey, what the one-light-day milestone really means, how NASA communicates with a spacecraft so far away, and what the probe can still teach us about interstellar space.
After nearly five decades, humanity’s distant explorer is still moving outward into the unknown.
