MACHINE FUNK traces a line back to the early 1980s, when drum machines such as the Roland TR-808 began changing the language of hip-hop, electro and dance music. Its synthetic kick, sharp claps, mechanical percussion and unmistakable low end became the foundation for a new generation of rhythm-driven music. From early electro and hip-hop, that machine pulse travelled through electro-funk, freestyle, breakbeat and Miami bass — becoming heavier, faster and increasingly physical.
