DRUM LESSONS: LESSON 2 - BASIC QUARTER NOTE GROOVES (BEGINNER ●○○) [PDF AVAILABLE!]

Welcome to this new drum lesson! In this video, we’ll work on some basic quarter note grooves. These are very simple beginner exercises, but don’t let their simplicity fool you, they can be incredibly rewarding to play! These grooves are the foundation of countless songs, and once you get comfortable with them, you’ll be able to use them to play along with many famous and fun tracks. For the right hand, you can play the quarter notes either on the hi-hat or on the ride cymbal, giving you the opportunity to explore both sounds while practicing the same basic coordination. The tempo is set at 80 BPM. It may feel slow, but that’s intentional. At this stage, the goal is not speed, it’s to focus on coordination, consistency, and smoothness. With time and practice, you’ll be able to gradually increase the tempo. But don’t rush it! Build a solid foundation first, and the speed will come naturally.
