Nirvana – Very Ape (Extended Veleno Guitar Mix)

Very Ape has always had one of the nastiest sharpest guitar sounds on In Utero, so I wanted to stretch that side of the song out a little more with this mix. One of the coolest things about the recording is the Veleno aluminum guitar. Steve Albini had one at the studio during the In Utero sessions, and Kurt ended up using it. These guitars are insanely rare, and because they’re made almost entirely out of aluminum, they have this really sharp, metallic, aggressive sound. That tone fits In Utero perfectly. The whole album has this raw, abrasive, almost uncomfortable sound to it, and the Veleno just adds to that feeling. On Very Ape, especially, it has this attacking quality that makes the guitar feel like it’s cutting straight through the mix. So for this version, I basically wanted to lean into that. I extended the song, brought out more of that guitar attack, and tried to make it feel even more aggressive without losing what makes the original so good.
