On September 27, 1942, the lightly armed Liberty ship SS Stephen Hopkins unexpectedly encountered the German commerce raider Stier and supply ship Tannenfels in the South Atlantic. Outgunned and unable to escape, Captain Paul Buck, Navy Armed Guard commander Kenneth Willett, Cadet Edwin O’Hara, and civilian merchant mariners kept the ship’s single 4-inch stern gun firing as both vessels suffered catastrophic damage. This video reconstructs the close-range World War II naval battle, explains how Stier’s converted merchant-ship construction and vulnerable internal systems helped turn American hits into fatal fires and mechanical failures, and follows the Stephen Hopkins from its last stand to the survivors’ 31-day drift to Brazil.
