Join me as I explore Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan, two incredible Indonesian islands where an old way of life is making a return — traditional seaweed farming. For generations, local families worked the shallow waters between the islands, planting, harvesting and drying seaweed to make a living from the ocean. Seaweed farming became an important part of the local economy from the 1980s, long before tourism transformed Lembongan and Ceningan into the popular destinations they are today. Research has documented the dramatic decline of seaweed farming as tourism expanded. (ScienceDirect) Then everything changed. When international tourism collapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic, many island families returned to the sea. The once-familiar checkerboard patterns of seaweed farms began appearing again across the shallow waters between Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.
