FTCE General Knowledge Math: Real-World Measurement & Rate Problems

What's going on, my math party people! Coach Anderson here, and today we're tackling one of the most practical skills you'll see on the FTCE GK Math: working with measurements, units, and rates in real-world situations. Whether it's adding up time in minutes and seconds, figuring out how far apart two hikers are, or calculating how long a jog takes, this is the kind of problem-solving that shows up on test day and catches people off guard if they haven't practiced it. All three problems in this video build the same core skill: reading a real-world scenario, identifying what's being measured, and using the right setup to get your answer. This skill also appears on the Praxis Core Math, so if you're prepping for both, you're in the right place. --- PROBLEMS COVERED: 0:00 - A soldier completes three timed tasks: 4 minutes 35 seconds, 3 minutes 50 seconds, and 2 minutes 45 seconds. What is the total time? 4:04 - Hiker A leaves Pine Camp at 6 AM averaging 3 mph. Hiker B leaves at 9 AM averaging 4 mph in the same direction. At 12 PM, how far apart are the two hikers? 7:06 - A jogger covers 9.6 miles at a steady 6 mph. How long does the jog take? --- QUICK TIPS FOR MEASUREMENT PROBLEMS: For time addition, always handle the seconds column first. If your seconds total 60 or more, convert the excess into minutes before writing your final answer. For rate problems (distance, speed, time), write out the relationship distance = rate x time before you do anything else. Decide which piece you're solving for, then rearrange. For two-object problems, track each person or object separately and then compare. Don't try to combine them too early. Pay attention to start times.
