In May 1945, soldiers found a "Vermeer" that Hermann Göring had bought during the occupation, and the trail led to one Dutch painter. Charged with selling his country's heritage to the enemy, Han van Meegeren confessed that he had painted it himself, then had to prove it by painting another in custody. This is the court record, with the hero legend labelled as legend.
