The Sugarcane Farmers Protest in Karnataka has reached the national capital, with a delegation of farmers travelling from Belagavi to Delhi to press for better prices and support for the sugarcane sector. A crucial meeting scheduled for October 12, led by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, is expected to discuss the farmers’ demands and possible solutions. Around 35 farmers are expected to participate in discussions covering sugar prices, Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP), ethanol procurement and other issues affecting sugarcane growers. The delegation’s visit follows a major protest held on September 29, when farmers demanded better returns and government intervention. The Sugarcane Farmers Protest has put the spotlight on the difference between the Minimum Selling Price (MSP) of sugar and the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) paid for sugarcane. These are separate price mechanisms, and farmers are seeking measures that improve their earnings. Ethanol procurement policy is another important issue because it affects the economics of sugar mills and sugarcane production.
