A maintenance job includes warming a part, joining a small assembly and cutting a stainless blank. Each task needs a different process decision. A flame that heats steel does not automatically make a suitable weld, and a machine that severs plate may not be able to pierce it at the same thickness. This lesson completes the heating and joining topics associated with BC Level 1 oxy-fuel work, then develops plasma-cutting preparation, use and inspection. It builds on the gas-system and hot-work controls in the previous lesson. The examples are original studies; practical settings come from the identified equipment and approved procedure.
Moving diagrams, worked examples and separate practice answers for Millwright learners.
WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Select compatible oxy-fuel heating equipment, distinguish preheat and postheat, measure temperature and calculate an explicitly bounded free-expansion example.
• Distinguish oxyacetylene fusion welding, brazing and braze welding; explain preparation, filler and flux selection, fit, thermal control and weld indications.
• Explain plasma equipment, cutting-current and protective connections, compatible gases and consumables, ratings, setup and supervised cutting operations.
• Inspect thermal-work results, investigate defects within procedure limits, identify unsafe equipment and complete prescribed shutdown, maintenance and handover.
CHAPTERS
0:00 Choose what the heat must accomplish
0:45 Separate preheat, postheat and heat treatment
2:15 A rosebud needs adequate flow, not just a gauge reading
3:45 Estimate free expansion without inventing a heating limit
8:24 Distinguish radial clearance from diametral clearance
15:07 Protective earth is separate from the work lead
20:41 Estimate travel time with explicit assumptions
23:44 Practice: calculate growth and ideal travel time
24:42 Answer: useful estimates retain their limits
25:31 Retrieval check: explain the mechanism and the evidence
26:12 Prepare for supervised heating, joining and cutting
HOW TO STUDY
Watch the mechanism. Explain the example aloud. Pause for practice. Recall the answers tomorrow.
