Robotic welding with 3D scanning and automatic path planning: In the ISEGRIM research project, ALOtec Dresden and BCT show how sensor system, robot control and path planning work together. A key step toward repairing erosion damage in fusion reactors on site.
A KEYENCE 2D/3D laser profile scanner captures the part. In the BCT software, the area to be processed is selected and the weld path is planned, for this demo with our logo as the contour. The robot runs the path virtually first, then for real just above the part. After welding, a second scan checks the result.
Every step from scan to inspection works with the same data, and the software runs on different robot controllers. For this test, we used arc welding (Fronius iWave), because the focus is on how scanner, control and path planning interact. In the project itself, the repair will later be done with wire-based laser cladding (LMD-w).
About ISEGRIM: The inner walls of fusion reactors are under extreme stress and erode over time. Replacing these components is expensive and causes long downtimes. In ISEGRIM, we’re developing a concept for a mobile robot system that detects erosion damage and repairs it on site.
