A perfectly planked deck can still make your model ship look like a piece of decorative flooring. I explain why clean workmanship, heavy seams, repeated joints, and overly uniform colors often destroy the illusion of scale—and how to make the deck feel like real timber under boots, barrels, and seawater.
I’ll show you how I test scale instead of simply adding detail, research the vessel before choosing materials, select a convincing plank width, control seam contrast, vary tones naturally, and keep joints from taking over the surface. The goal is simple: restore the hierarchy of detail until the deck stops demanding attention and starts disappearing into the ship.
