On September 16, 1989, after touring NASA's Johnson Space Center, Boris Yeltsin made an unplanned stop at an ordinary Randalls supermarket in Clear Lake, Texas. The man who had sat in the Soviet leadership walked the aisles asking prices, questioning staff, and reportedly saying that not even the Politburo had this kind of choice. On the flight out of Houston, he sat in silence with his head in his hands. Two years and three months later, the Soviet Union no longer existed. 🏙️ Subscribe to The Silent Union for more forgotten stories of Soviet-era grandeur, secret cities, and the empire that built and then lost them.
