In 2008 and 2009, a deadly fungal outbreak at a New Orleans children's hospital was linked to something almost nobody suspected: the linens. For more than a century, making laundry truly safe has meant two heavy weapons, scalding hot water and chlorine bleach, and both come at a real cost. This is the story of how cold water and a gas made from air could change that. It starts with old bleachfields and the French factory that gave bleach its name, then moves to Clorox, the CDC's hot-water laundry standards and the fact that about 90% of a washer's energy goes into heating water. Then comes ozone: discovered by Christian Schönbein in 1840, made by Werner von Siemens' "controlled lightning" machine, and used to clean drinking water since 1906. It ends with ArtiClean's approach of dissolving ozone into the cold water supply before it reaches the washer, and a hotel case study that paid for itself in about seven and a half months. We also cover where ozone laundry falls short.
