For more than thirty years, copper was kept out of computer chips because it poisons silicon. Then, in 1997, IBM cracked the problem and copper took over every advanced chip on Earth. Now copper is failing again, for a stranger reason: the thinner a copper wire gets, the worse it conducts, and the wires inside modern chips are running out of room. This is the story of copper's rise and its new wall. We go from J.J. Thomson's 1901 prediction and a forgotten thin-film paper by Klaus Fuchs, to IBM's "Nine Commandments," the cobalt and ruthenium stopgaps, and the Nobel-winning physics of topological materials. It ends at Stanford, where researchers made niobium phosphide films that get better as they get thinner and beat copper below five nanometres, at temperatures a real chip factory can use. Could it replace copper forever? The honest answer is in the video.
