Junior Kopex Band (also known as Jnr Kopex or Junior Kopex) is a classic Tolai rock / PNG oldies band rooted in Rabaul, East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. It carries forward the vibrant musical legacy of the original Kopex Band from the height of Rabaul’s golden era of local recording in the 1980s. The original Kopex emerged in the 1980s with infectious hits such as “Haus Bensin” (Haus Benzin), “Elizabeth,” and others, recorded at the influential Pacific Gold Studios in Rabaul. Lead vocalist Leonard Kania fronted the group alongside the late Kamit Mamua on lead guitar. The band blended electric guitars, steady danceable grooves, call-and-response vocals, and lyrics often in Kuanua (the Tolai language), capturing everyday life, relationships, work, and village belonging in a style that became a staple of Tolai rock. After Mamua’s passing in 1989 the original lineup lost momentum; Leonard Kania left in 1991 to pursue a solo career. A new generation then stepped up: Junior Kopex, dominated by Leonard Kania’s younger brothers, took the name and the sound forward and kept the momentum alive through the 1990s and beyond. Junior Kopex continued recording in the same energetic Tolai rock tradition—clean-to-lightly-distorted guitars, rhythmic grooves built for dancing, strong vocal harmonies, and lyrics that speak directly to PNG audiences. Their catalogue includes enduring favourites that still appear on “PNG oldies,” “Tolai rock,” and classic CHM Supersound playlists. Tracks such as “Rait Lewa,” “K. Nite Klub,” “Abul Hoodsco,” “Mabata Street,” “Kulungi,” “Ayoo Mami,” “Yu Tasol,” “Bitamangas,” and many others from volumes reissued or released around the CHM era remain widely streamed and played. The music sits squarely in the broader Rabaul scene that produced so much of PNG’s most loved Pacific island rock and string-band-influenced material before the 1994 volcanic eruptions reshaped the town.
