The Junior Devil Boys Stringband (also known as Junior Devils, Jnr Devils, or Junior Devil Boys String Band) was a Tolai stringband from the Rabaul area in East New Britain Province, Papua New Guinea. They formed part of the vibrant local stringband tradition that developed in the Gazelle Peninsula after World War II. Rabaul became a major centre for guitar-based popular music among Tolai (Gunantuna) communities, blending local styles, influences from Polynesian and other Pacific music, church hymns, and later commercial elements. Ensembles typically featured multiple acoustic guitars, ukuleles, bass, and group vocals singing in Kuanua (the Tolai language) or Tok Pisin, often on themes of love, village life, relationships, and local places. The band recorded in the commercial cassette era of the 1980s–1990s at Pacific Gold Studios (PGS) in Rabaul, a key local label run by Greg C. Seeto (with producers/engineers including Patti Doi). Their work sits alongside other East New Britain stringbands of the period. Known releases and songs include the album Junior Devils / material later associated with Atabaran (or A Tabaran; digitally available around 2018 via Pacific Gold Studios), with tracks such as “Yu Laik,” “Warpiliai,” “Tunulai” / “A Tunulai,” “Satan Control,” and medleys including “Amaningning.” These circulated widely on cassette and radio in PNG and remain available on platforms like YouTube and streaming services. They are referenced in credits and acknowledgments linked to other prominent Rabaul-area acts (for example, alongside Jungle Juice Boys, Langa Vibrations, and others in material connected to the Moab Stringband and George Telek’s circle). One later note indicates a group once known as JNR Devils later performed under a name such as Jnr Solitary String Band from the Vunakabi area. Their legacy is that of a classic regional stringband contributing to East New Britain’s distinctive guitar sound during the height of the PNG cassette industry. Like many Rabaul-area groups, their music reflects the resilience and creativity of Tolai communities amid the town’s history of volcanic eruptions, wartime destruction, and social change.
