The halogens are Group I in reverse. Every Group VII element has seven electrons in its outer shell, so instead of losing an electron, they need to gain one to complete the shell — that's why they're reactive non-metals. And unlike Group I, their reactivity decreases as you go down the group. In this video I explain the properties of the Group VII halogens for Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620), topic 8.3.
We cover why Group VII elements have similar properties (seven outer electrons), their physical properties and the trend in colour and physical state down the group, how reactivity decreases down the group and why (the outer shell is further from the nucleus, so it's harder to attract an electron in), and displacement reactions — a more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive one from its salt. Once you connect the trend to electron arrangement, you can predict it rather than memorise it.
