Unseen Siberia: Life at −71°C, the Coldest Place Anyone Has Ever Lived | 4K Travel Documentary

Minus seventy-one degrees. Thirteen million square kilometres. And cities of hundreds of thousands of people built on ground that never thaws. Yakutsk, home to around three hundred and fifty thousand people on the banks of the Lena, is the largest city in the world built on continuous permafrost, every building lifted clear of the frozen ground. Further into the interior, the villages of Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk have traded the record for the coldest inhabited place on Earth for a century, where steel turns brittle and engines run for weeks without stopping. Beneath it all, the permafrost reaches around fifteen hundred metres deep under central Yakutia. It preserves mammoths with skin and hair still intact, gives up ivory from collapsing riverbanks every spring, and is now opening into the kilometre-long Batagaika crater. Nearby, the Mirny diamond pit drops five hundred and twenty-five metres into the same frozen ground. Further south lies Lake Baikal, the deepest lake on Earth, holding close to a fifth of the planet's unfrozen fresh water. Beyond it stretch the larch taiga, the site of the 1908 Tunguska blast, the Lena Pillars, and the Yamal peninsula, where Nenets herders still move with the reindeer, new craters appear in the tundra, and the thawing ground is starting to loosen the foundations everything here stands on.
