Madagascar sits 400 kilometres off the African coast, isolated for 88 million years. That separation shaped everything: lemurs, fossas, baobabs and aye-ayes filling roles taken elsewhere by monkeys, cats, woodpeckers and trees built from dense timber. The people arrived around 1,000 to 2,000 years ago, from Borneo, not Africa. They brought rice farming, zebu cattle and fire. Today, roughly 90 percent of the original forest is gone. On an island where hundreds of species exist in a single valley, forest loss is not damage to a population. It is the end of one.
