Karim Khan's true legacy is holding Israel to account | The David Hearst Podcast

David Hearst, editor in chief of Middle East Eye, says that the dismissal of International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan was the result of an 18 month campaign led by Israel after he sought arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant. Hearst says Israel made little effort to hide its role. Khan was intimidated, pressured through intermediaries and publicly accused by Netanyahu, even though Khan had applied for the warrants before becoming aware of the allegations against him. Hearst warns that removing Khan will not protect the ICC. Instead, it has encouraged Israel, the United States and pro-Israel campaigners to target other international officials, including UN special rapporteur Francesca Albanese, while the warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant face continuing legal challenges. He concludes that whatever now happens to Khan, his name will be linked forever to the ICC arrest warrants against Netanyahu and Gallant, which remain the most effective, serious and meaningful response the international community has made to the genocide in Gaza. Those warrants expose Israeli war crimes as never before and, for the first time ever in this conflict, make the highest office bearers in the land accountable for them.
