When kings become miscreants, God becomes a king. When bodies become diseased, God becomes the physician. In Srimad Bhagavatam 2.7.20-21, Brahmaji describes two more extraordinary avataras — the Manu avatara and the continued glorification of Lord Dhanvantari — each addressing a different dimension of the living entity's suffering in the material world. Verse 20 describes the Lord's incarnation as Manu — the original lawgiver and father of humanity. As the Manu avatara, the Lord descended into the Manu dynasty and ruled directly over the miscreant kingly order, subduing them with His powerful Sudarshana Chakra wheel weapon. Undeterred in all circumstances, His rule was characterized by glorious fame spread over all three lokas and above. Srila Prabhupada's purport establishes the Vedic principle clearly — a king who does not rule according to the laws of God is a miscreant. And when the rulers of the world become demons, the Lord Himself descends to correct the order — either through His avatara or through His empowered representative. Verse 21 returns to Lord Dhanvantari — and Srila Prabhupada's purport here is one of the most striking statements in all of Chapter 7. The embodied living entity is diseased by the very construction of his body. The body is the symbol of diseases. Disease may differ from one variety to another — but disease must be there, just as birth and death must be there for everyone. Medical science can treat the body. Ayurveda — inaugurated by Dhanvantari himself — can extend life and reduce suffering. But only the grace of the Personality of Godhead can relieve the soul of the constant repetition of birth and death — the root disease that all others merely symptomize. Dhanvantari gave us Ayurveda to heal the body. The Bhagavatam gives us bhakti to heal the soul. Both come from the same source — the Supreme Lord. Today's special episode also includes the Janmashtami celebration — a perfect complement to a class on the Lord's incarnations.
