Madikeri fort history…Origins & Construction: The fort was originally constructed in the last quarter of the 17th century (around 1681) by Mudduraja, the ruler of the Haleri dynasty. He built it out of mud when he established Madikeri as the capital of Kodagu. Reconstruction by Tipu Sultan: In the late 18th century, Tipu Sultan captured the fort and rebuilt it using granite stone to reinforce its defenses, renaming it Jafarabad. Restoration by the Haleri Kings: In 1790, Doddavira Rajendra reclaimed the fort from Tipu Sultan's forces and restored the Haleri dynasty's rule over Kodagu. Further structural additions and renovations were carried out by Linga Rajendra II in 1812–1814, including a palace within the premises. British Colonial Rule: Following the annexation of Kodagu by the British East India Company in 1834, the fort was occupied by British officials. They modified the structure over time, adding a church and converting parts of the palace into administrative buildings.
