ECI Form 6 U-turn just dropped as the Election Commission quietly removed the controversial parents and grandparents SIR declaration from its portal overnight. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar faced internal revolt when Election Commissioners Sukhbir Sandhu and Vivek Joshi called the new Form 6 rules unauthorized and illegal under the Representation of the People Act. Special Intensive Revision SIR rules that forced young voters to dig up 2003 polling booth numbers have now been pulled after massive backlash. The Election Commission added sections J and K to Form 6 requiring new voters to declare whether their parents or grandparents appeared in previous SIR voter lists and provide old serial numbers and booth details. Two Election Commissioners objected in writing, calling the change illegal because only the Law Ministry can amend statutory forms. On the night of 29-30 September the appendix vanished from the ECI Net portal. Opposition parties under the INDIA bloc held a high-powered meeting at Delhi’s Constitution Club, issued a six-point demand letter, and announced a march to the Commission office on 6 October. Leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Omar Abdullah, Tejashwi Yadav and others attended. Meanwhile TMC MP Mahua Moitra filed a separate police complaint against Seema Khanna, Director General (IT), alleging that ECINET restricted Electoral Registration Officers from adding or correcting names, leaving eligible voters off the rolls.
