17th November 1979 at Stamford Bridge (23,130)
Chelsea 3 (0) (Fillery 51, Britton 54 59 (2 pens.)): Borota, Locke, Sparrow (Langley 35), Bumstead, Droy, Chivers, Britton, Fillery, Frost, Walker, Harris.
Charlton Athletic 1 (1) (Tydeman 26): Johns, Hazell, Campbell, Tydeman, Berry, Madden, Powell, Wilson (Shaw 78), Hales, Walker, Gritt.
Referee: D. Hutchinson (Bourne (Cambs.))
Order of goals: CA C(3)
Penalties: There was considerable confusion over why the first penalty was awarded. At first it was thought that Berry had been penalised for a handling offence which was generally considered a harsh decision when the TV transmission was analysed. Later, however, it was announced that it was Hazell, and not Berry, who conceded the penalty, again for an obscure handling offence. The second penalty award was straightforward, correctly going against Wilson for tripping Walker.
Booked: Madden (54) for arguing about first penalty decision.
Injured: Sparrow taken to hospital with blurred vision and concussion.
Televised: 'Big Match' cameras were present for transmission on Sunday afternoon.
New signings Viggo Jacobson and Johnny Ostergaard watched above match before flying back to Denmark to finalise their personal arrangements. They returned to England the following Thursday.
