Eunice, Where the Prairie Sings
A Musical Journey Through the History and Heart of Eunice, Louisiana (1894–2026)
Some places are more than just dots on a map. They're the places that shaped us, the people who raised us, the memories we carry, and the traditions that live on long after generations have passed.
“Eunice, Where the Prairie Sings” is my heartfelt musical tribute to my hometown of Eunice, Louisiana—a community built upon faith, family, friendship, hard work, and a rich Cajun heritage.
Beginning with the open prairies and the founding of Eunice in 1894 by C. C. Duson, who named the town in honor of his wife, Eunice Pharr Duson, this historical ballad journeys through more than 130 years of hometown memories.
Along the way, we remember the railroad that helped build our town, the merchants of Second Street, the legendary boudin at Johnson's Grocery, the Liberty Theatre, and the Cajun music that continues to give Eunice its unmistakable character.
This song is also deeply personal.
My parents operated Vidrine's Fish Market, where Mom, Dad, and Uncle Ferdie welcomed customers and friends alike. Some came to buy seafood; others came simply to visit. During crawfish season, hardworking women—including my mother—gathered around tables peeling crawfish, earning a living while sharing stories, laughter, and friendship.
Those doors have long since closed, but the memories remain.
We also celebrate the enduring musical traditions of Marc and Ann Savoy, the Saturday morning gatherings at Savoy Music Center, and the wonderful Cajun musicians who have kept our heritage alive. I'm particularly proud to own an accordion made by Marc Savoy himself.
And there's KEUN Radio, broadcasting since 1952, and Ric “Kahuna” Nesbitt, whose dedication to Eunice and its people continues to make a difference.
From the colorful riders of the Courir de Mardi Gras to the familiar streets, churches, businesses, and faces of generations past, this is a song about much more than history.
It's about belonging.
Some businesses are gone. Some familiar voices have fallen silent. The world around us has changed in countless ways.
But the spirit of Eunice lives on in the people who remember, the families who remain, and the generations who carry its traditions forward.
This video combines historical photographs, personal family memories, and AI-assisted artistic recreations to bring those stories to life. Some scenes are artistic interpretations rather than actual historical photographs.
The original lyrics and creative direction are my own, with AI-assisted musical production and visual imagery.
Dedicated to the people of Eunice—past, present, and future—and especially to those whose lives and sacrifices helped make our little prairie town what it is today.
If Eunice has ever been your home, I hope this song brings back a few memories. And if you recognize a place, remember a business, or have a story about the people who made this town special, please share it in the comments.
Because history isn't just written in books. It's carried in the hearts of those who lived it.
“From eighteen ninety-four till now,
Through all that time can bring,
There's a little town upon the prairie...
And the prairie still can sing.”
