Daniel Pinsky is fighting for every single mile aboard EXODUS in the Golden Globe Race.
With almost no wind, sails slamming from side to side and progress painfully slow, Daniel is exhausted — but the challenges are only beginning.
Sailing close to the north-west coast of Spain at night, Daniel keeps the spinnaker flying while trying to work out his position using traditional navigation. With no modern GPS navigation allowed, he searches the darkness for lighthouse flashes and compares their sequences with his charts.
Sleep is almost impossible.
At one point, after several exhausting days, Daniel accidentally falls asleep without setting an alarm and wakes in panic, worried he could be heading towards the rocks.
Yet between the stress and exhaustion come some extraordinary moments: spectacular sunsets, beautiful sunrises and the strange realization that this is only the beginning of what could be around 250 days at sea.
Daniel hopes that once around the north-west corner of Spain and towards Cape Finisterre, he can finally catch the stronger northerly winds down the Portuguese coast — his hoped-for “express train to the Canaries.”
