Marielle Velander returns to Product Ops Podcast five years after Season One to share how her anthropology background shapes the way she approaches product operations and portfolio management. She treats every meeting, coffee chat, and document as data, and she keeps "one foot in, one foot out" so she can see a problem from every stakeholder's perspective. Since her first appearance, Marielle has grown from a product operations team of one to a senior role at Babbel in Berlin, then to N26, where she moved into product portfolio management. In between, she took a year-long sabbatical, traveling to 15 countries and leading penguin tours in Chile. In this episode, we talk about: Why product ops can feel like a longitudinal ethnographic study of how people make decisions at work How metaphors and shared language help you align marketing, engineering, and leadership Marielle's results on the Product Operations Archetype Assessment: our first-ever tie between Change Agent and Resilient Driver The emotional toll of building a great system that people won't adopt How to manage scope creep and prioritize ruthlessly Productive procrastination, and balancing complex problems with satisfying cleanup work What a sabbatical taught her about burnout, and why she took one before she hit the wall The conversation she says the community still isn't having: career paths for senior product ops leaders 00:00 Introduction and guest background 00:00 Marielle's career journey and transition into product ops 00:00 Early days in product operations and learning curve 00:00 Moving into portfolio management and strategic decision-making 00:00 The importance of adaptability in product roles 00:00 Background in anthropology and its influence on her work 00:00 Ethnographic methods and stakeholder communication 00:00 Navigating language and translation in cross-functional teams 00:00 Using metaphors to simplify complex concepts 00:00 The resilient driver archetype and handling ambiguity 00:00 The emotional toll of product operations and managing expectations 00:00 Signs of burnout and self-care strategies 00:00 Connecting the dots and managing scope creep 00:00 Restoring energy and work-life balance 00:00 Self-reflection and continuous improvement 00:00 Future career trajectories in product ops 00:00 Closing thoughts and contact information
