Brownout on a Cliff: Pave Hawk Rescues Marcus Luttrell

A Pave Hawk crew from the 920th Rescue Wing attempts a night rescue of Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell on a tiny cliff ledge as gunfire rages and a deadly brownout looms. Deep in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush, the Taliban ambushes a four-man SEAL team and a Chinook sent to extract them is destroyed by an RPG. With special operations reeling, the U.S. Air Force Reserve’s 920th steps in. Trained on in-air refueling over the Gulf of Mexico and equipped with infrared cameras and countermeasures, Skinny, Spanky, Gonzo, JP and elite PJs push into the same valley where a helicopter was just shot down, searching through the night on NVGs for any signal of life. On the final run, comms confusion shifts the coordinates, the Spectre gunship cannot burn through cloud, and the LZ turns out to be a tiny shelf carved into a mountainside. An A-10 Warthog cuts a hole in the gloom and lasers the spot - “like the finger of God.” Skinny drops a glow stick to mark it and yanks away to draw fire while Spanky takes the landing. A total brownout engulfs the helicopter inches from a rock wall and a sheer drop, until a single blowing bush becomes the only hover reference that saves the crew. On the ground, the PJs authenticate the survivor with his favorite superhero, Spider-Man, confirm he is Marcus Luttrell, and launch with minutes of fuel to spare. “Welcome home, brother.” Then comes the second mission: bring home the fallen.
