On 13 October 1977, Lufthansa Flight LH 181 left Mallorca for Frankfurt with five crew and 86 passengers. Four PFLP terrorists with pistols and grenades seized the 737, herding passengers to the rear and forcing Captain Jürgen Schumann and co-pilot Jürgen Vietor to divert first to Rome, then across the Middle East. Led by Zuhair Akache, calling himself Captain Mahmoud, the group demanded 15 million dollars and the release of prisoners, including members of the Bader-Meinhof group. In Bonn, minister Hans-Jürgen Wyschniewski called in GSG 9 commander Ulrich Wegener, who in turn welcomed SAS adviser Barry Davies. As the jet endured stops in Cyprus, Bahrain, and Dubai, Schumann risked a covert cigar-packet signal revealing there were two male and two female hijackers. Wegener’s team improvised: cutting ladders to 737 height, dulling gear with black paint, and preparing the then-new stun grenades. But the plane lifted off again, detouring to Aden where Schumann made a perilous sand-strip landing - and was later shot by Mahmoud after stepping to the control tower. Flown on to Mogadishu, the aircraft was rigged with plastic explosives. As heat, thirst and fear escalated, cabin crew member Gabby Dillman radioed a heartbreaking farewell. Playing for time, Wyschniewski bluffed that money and freed comrades were en route, winning a late-night window for an assault. Just before the extended deadline, GSG 9 approached from the rear blind spot. Somali troops set off a huge diversion 300 metres away as teams hit six entry points at once. Stun grenades flashed, doors slammed down, and shouts of "Hin legen!" drove passengers low while operators pushed forward. One female terrorist fell wounded; another man advanced with two grenades, one pin already pulled, injuring two but failing to detonate catastrophically. Mahmoud was cornered near the cockpit while the cabin was cleared and hostages were rushed down ladders. Seven minutes after entry, Wegener’s radio code word "springtime" confirmed success. All four terrorists were down; the lone survivor, Suheyla Sallie, was carried out defiant.
