Why did Jesus stop for one woman while Jairus was desperately waiting for Him to save his dying daughter?
In Mark 5:21–43, two extraordinary stories unfold along the same journey.
Jairus, a synagogue leader and desperate father, falls at Jesus' feet. His little daughter is dying, and he begs Jesus to come to his home.
Jesus agrees.
But as they walk through a crowded street, a woman who has suffered from bleeding for twelve years reaches out and touches His clothing.
Immediately, she is healed.
Then Jesus stops.
He turns toward the crowd and asks who touched Him.
The woman comes forward trembling and tells Him the truth. Instead of letting her disappear anonymously into the crowd, Jesus calls her "daughter" and sends her away in peace.
But while Jesus is still speaking, devastating news arrives.
Jairus' daughter has died.
What happens next reveals another extraordinary part of this story.
Jesus tells Jairus not to fear, but to believe. He continues to the house, takes the girl by the hand, and speaks the words Mark preserves: "Talitha koum."
And the twelve-year-old girl rises.
In this cinematic Bible story, we explore:
Why Jesus stopped to recognize the woman who touched His clothes.
What His words to her reveal about compassion, faith, and dignity.
Why Jairus' desperate journey and the woman's healing are told together.
What happened when Jairus received the news of his daughter's death.
The meaning of Jesus' words, "Do not fear, only believe."
The connection between a woman who suffered for twelve years and a girl who was twelve years old.
What these intertwined miracles reveal about Jesus' attention to people in need.
The Gospel does not explain every reason Jesus chose to stop. Nor does it say that His conversation with the woman caused the girl's death.
Instead, Mark shows Jesus responding personally to the woman's suffering and continuing toward Jairus' home.
This story is not a guarantee that every illness or loss will be reversed in our lives. It is a powerful account of faith, compassion, fear, and the authority of Jesus.
