The Building on the Beach That Runs the Internet

There is a low concrete building near a beach, behind a chain-link fence, with a sign that means nothing to anyone driving past. Inside it, the internet of an entire country arrives. Not metaphorically. Physically. There are about 1,893 of these worldwide, serving 694 cable systems. Almost none of them look like what they are. This video follows a cable in from the water: the buried approach, the beach manhole where the cable is physically secured to land, the duct running inland to the station, and then the two completely different things that happen to the glass and the copper. That second one is the part almost nobody knows. The amplifiers spaced along a cable in the middle of the ocean have no power source of their own. There is no generator on the seabed. Every one of them is fed electrically from shore, at thousands of volts, down the copper core of the cable. The landing station is not just where the data arrives. It is the power plant for a cable that may stretch to another continent. Then the strategic part.
