How does a screen make every colour? It mixes just three lights: red, green and blue!
In this Code Quest Kids episode, Bit the robot wants to colour the black-and-white heart from our pixels episode. We zoom into a pixel to find three tiny lights, discover that light mixes differently from paint (red and green light make yellow!), and learn that each light gets a brightness number from 0 to 255. So a coloured pixel is three numbers, like (255, 255, 0) for yellow, and three lights with 256 levels each make over 16 million colours. We paint Bit's heart, use a colour code in Scratch, write a colour in Python, and take a quick quiz.
Try it yourself: colour a heart on squared paper and write the three numbers next to each colour, or slide red, green and blue in a colour picker with a grown-up.
Code Quest Kids: fun, colourful coding lessons for curious kids.
