Amrut Oloroso 60%: Video 238; Tropically Old, Affordable, Strath Anniversary Edition

Video 238: I am fortunate to have friends and family to trade whisky with because the review I'm doing is not on my own bottle. It's actually on someone else's bottle. I tried a dram of this whisky at my son in law, Randy and daughter, Rachel's bar and all I can say is it just left a lasting impression. This is an Indian Single Malt at cask strength; The Strath 20th Anniversary Edition (in Victoria BC) which is from Amrut Distillery. My research discovered a lot of interesting facts and history of both Amrut Distillery and the enormous Indian Whisky industry, which by the way is the largest output of whisky sales in the world. Also interesting is the accelerated maturing in the cask that takes place in that tropical climate and the huge loss of whisky to the "Angels Share". Another surprising fact is the Kasauli Distillery in India is the oldest distillery in all of Asia. It was built as a brewery first in the late 1820s by a an Englishman born in India, Edward Dyer. He later started distilling and eventually sold the business to H.G. Meakin in 1887. It is now a brewery and distillery operated by Mohan Meakin Ltd and is situated at over 6,000 feet in the Himalayas, making it one of the world's highest and oldest continuously operating distilleries. Another old Indian whisky distillery, Rampur Distillery, was established in 1943. Amrut Laboratories started in 1947 the year of India's independence from Great Britain. They started to distill spirits in 1948. India is not new to distilling spirits but it was Amrut that was the first Indian distillery to introduce the single malt whisky to the global market in 2004. Jim Murray named the Amrut Fusion "the Third Best Whisky in the World" in his Whisky Bible in 2010. His rating of 97 points, significantly raised the profile of Indian whisky establishing it as a serious competitor in the global single malt market. This has also paved the way for Paul John, Rampur, Indri. and other Indian distilleries to be recognized for their quality on the global market for Single Malt Whisky. So what about the Amrut Oloroso Cask Strength, a Strath exclusive 20th Anniversary Edition and why did it leave a lasting impression on me from my first tasting at Randy and Rachel's?
