What happens to your mind and body if you stay awake for 264 hours, and why do we need sleep at all? From a teenager who tried it in 1963 to a jellyfish with no brain, here is what sleep research has found.
In 1963, seventeen-year-old Randy Gardner tried to prove that nothing bad happens if you skip sleep. We follow his eleven days, then look at the studies behind what sleep does: mood, memory, connections between neurons, DNA repair, and even the gut. We also look at the animals and the families that show what happens when sleep goes missing.

A NOTE ON THE SCIENCE
Several findings in this video come from mice, flies, fish, rats and jellyfish, and are labeled that way on screen. Some questions, like whether sleep clears the brain's waste, are still debated. The smoke alarm, zipped folder, motorway and engine are analogies, not findings. This video is for education, not medical advice.
