In this video, we will understand how to move reusable Power Query transformation logic from individual Power BI PBIX files into Microsoft Fabric using Dataflow Gen2.
The goal is not to remove Power Query from Power BI.
The goal is to stop repeating the same cleaning and preparation logic across multiple PBIX files.
We will start with three local CSV files:
• Sales.csv
• Products.csv
• Customers.csv
Then we will move them into Fabric, prepare the data using Dataflow Gen2, and create reusable analytical tables inside a Lakehouse.
The complete journey will be:
Laptop Files
→ Raw Files in Fabric
→ Dataflow Gen2
→ Lakehouse Tables
→ Semantic Model
→ Power BI Report
In this video, you will learn:
• Why repeated Power Query logic becomes difficult to manage
• What it means to move transformations upstream
• How Dataflow Gen2 relates to Power Query
• How to upload raw CSV files into a Fabric Lakehouse
• Difference between Files and Tables in a Lakehouse
• How to clean and transform data using Dataflow Gen2
• How to create FactSales, DimProduct and DimCustomer
• When reusable cleaning logic should move to Fabric
• When report-specific filtering should stay outside the reusable data layer
• Why every Power Query calculation should not automatically move into Dataflow Gen2
• How reusable Fabric tables can support multiple Power BI solutions
We will also discuss an important migration question:
Which Power Query transformations should actually move from PBIX to Fabric?
Examples include:
Reusable logic:
• Fixing data types
• Removing invalid Product IDs
• Standardizing Country names
• Cleaning Product Categories
Report-specific logic:
• Filtering only India customers for one specific report
Business calculations:
• Deciding whether logic such as Profit belongs in Dataflow Gen2 or the semantic model
The main takeaway is:
Before Fabric:
Files
→ Power Query inside PBIX
→ Semantic Model
→ Report
After moving reusable preparation to Fabric:
Files
→ Dataflow Gen2
→ Lakehouse
→ Semantic Model
→ Power BI Report
The objective is not to move everything.
The objective is to move common, reusable preparation into a shared Fabric data layer.
