I pulled the federal NHTSA complaint and recall data for every Ford F-150 model year from 2004 to 2025. Here are the six F-150 years I'd avoid, what goes wrong on each one, what to check before you buy, which engine I'd pick, and the one year I'd actually spend my own money on. One year has almost 2,800 owner complaints. One has 29 recalls. And one year everybody calls "the safe one" was recalled again in 2026 for a transmission that can drop into first gear at highway speed.
